Bob Gaona

Football ∙ Ambridge

Bob Gaona was another of Coach Moe Rubenstein’s Ambridge High School football stars who made good, earning three letters for the Bridgers at center, winning All WPIAL honors in 1948 and 1949, and playing in an All Star game at Forbes Field on August 23, 1949. At Wake Forest University, Bob switched to tackle and played that position for the rest of his college and professional football careers. In 1953, he earned All Southern Conference honors and was named to the International News Service All American team, the Associated Press All American second team, and the United Press All American honorable mention. Bob was also an outstanding tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1954 to 1956 and for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1957. Since 1958, Bob resided in Canoga Park, California, where he was employed in the personnel department of Rockwell International Corporation. He has served as Pop Warner Football League coach there and also has refereed football games of the Los Angeles school district. Bob was named to the Italian National Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.
