Bill Anderson was not the first newspaper
sportswriter in Beaver County, but he was the first to develop the
duties of sports editor on a full time basis. Unfortunately,
ill health made it impossible for Bill to attend the banquet when
he was inducted into the Beaver County Sports Hall
of Fame. Bill
joined The Daily Times, a predecessor of The Beaver County Times, in
1925 and served as sportswriter from 1926 to 1954. During his
28 year tenure, he broadened the scope of the sports department and
produced daily sports pages that covered local, regional, and
national news of a variety of sporting events. For many years, his
regular “Sports Slants” column was one of the most widely read
features in the Times. Bill also served as a court reporter and a
municipal news writer for the Times during most of his 45 year
newspaper career. He continued these duties until his retirement in
1970. Bill's versatility as a newspaper writer was evidenced by the
fact that in 1959 he won first place for court reporting in the
annual statewide competition of the Pennsylvania Association of
Newspaper Editors.
