Charles
Bell began earning nationwide recognition as early as junior high as
a member of three undefeated Beaver Junior High football teams.
National publications like Sports Illustrated, Jet Magazine, and the
Baltimore Courier reported the play in which one of Charles’
kickoffs left the stadium, estimated to travel over 100 yards.
Charles continued to rack up headlines in high school, helping
Beaver set a state consecutive game winning streak as a running
back, defensive back, and kicker. He was honored with offensive and defensive All Conference awards his junior and
senior year and in his senior year also was named All State, UP All
American mention, and played in the Big 33 game. Charles also set high
school track and field records in the broad jump (21’-3”) and the
100 yard low hurdles (13.1 seconds). Charles received tryouts with
both New York NFL teams, signing with the Jets and playing for their
minor league affiliate in Bridgeport, Connecticut, as a wide receiver and cornerback. After a year, Charles decided to
resume his education and graduated from Greensboro College in 1993
with a double major in sociology and psychology, and later earned a
master’s degree in human resource counseling from North Carolina
A&T. He also attended the University of Southern California of
Professional Studies to pursue a Juris Doctor degree. In addition,
Charles served on the Greensboro City Council and coached Pop Warner
