Don Bocchi has enjoyed a
43-year career in intercollegiate athletics at the NCAA
Division I level. Don graduated from Beaver Falls High
School in 1964, where he played three years of varsity
basketball, and then attended Adrian College in Adrian,
Michigan, playing one year of varsity basketball during the
1964-65 season. Don transferred to Duquesne University,
graduating in 1968, and subsequently earned a Master's
Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin in
1970.
Don began his coaching
career in 1970 in the Blackhawk School District, serving as
the head football and assistant basketball coach at Highland
Junior High School. In 1973, Don served as quarterback coach
on Blackhawk varsity staff, helping the Cougars to an 8-1
season in the Midwestern Athletic Conference AA Division.
Don moved into the
college ranks in 1975 as a member of the Kansas State
coaching staff. Don spent one year as a graduate assistant
for the Wildcats and two seasons as the team's recruiting
coordinator. In 1978, he was named an assistant to the
athletic director at Kansas State. In that position, Don
handled certification of eligibility, compliance with NCAA
regulations, and academics for the Wildcats. Don returned to
coaching and served as Kansas State's backfield coach from
1981 to 1984. His career there was highlighted by the
Wildcats first-ever bowl appearance at the 1982 Independence
Bowl.
Don's association with
Arizona State University started in 1985, where he served
for nine seasons as an assistant coach for Sun Devil
football. During that period, the Sun Devils appeared in
three bowl games, culminating with a win over Michigan in
the 1987 Rose Bowl. During his tenure as an assistant
football coach, Don recruited nine players who were drafted
into the NFL and a total of 15 players who went on to
careers in the NFL.
In 1993, Don left
coaching and was appointed President of the Sun Angel
Foundation, the fundraising arm of Arizona State University
Athletics. Under his leadership, the Sun Angel Foundation
has expanded its staff and programs while maintaining its
goal of promoting excellence in both academic and athletic
programs at Arizona State University. Don is currently
serving as a Senior Associate Athletics Director at Arizona
State University, where he has completed his 33rd year of
service. In that capacity, Don's primary duties include
oversight of 11 varsity head coaches and their programs:
baseball, wrestling, women's basketball, cross country and
track and field, men and women's golf, men and women's
tennis, volleyball, and women's soccer.
Don and his wife Eileen
have shared this journey together, having been married for
44 years. They have two sons, Matthew and Joel, and enjoy
the company of six grandchildren. |
