'A man of all seasons' best sums up Jim Cutri. For no matter what time of year, the popular educator was
busy molding and helping youth. Born and raised in Erie, Jim began
producing championship teams at Girard High School in both football
and basketball, and he earned several Coach of the Year awards in
both sports. His gridders had a 21 game winning streak over a
four year period. Jim took a job at Beaver in 1947 and got involved in
football as an assistant and baseball and track and field as the
head coach. Jim guided the Bobcat hardwood team to its first ever
section title and had many fine teams during his 16 years. In track
Jim had few peers: every one of Beaver’s records in the sport were
either tied or broken under his tutelage. In addition, a Bobcat
competed for a WPIAL championship in every event during his tenure.
For three years in a row, his Beaver teams were undefeated in dual
meet competition. And in the prestigious Midland Invitational his
Bobcat squads won six of the eleven years he coached. Jim was also
involved in officiating different sports, among these many college basketball games. Even during
the summer months Jim remained busy: he was the recreational
director for Beaver for 16 years, and his program was well known as
one of the most comprehensive of its kind. His many activities also
included serving in several civic organizations in Vanport.
