Although he played basketball at Aliquippa High
School, Gene Feher's main sport was football. He comes from a long
line of former Quip gridders who made it big. A two year starter at
center and linebacker on teams coached by the legendary
Carl Aschman,
Gene earned All Beaver County honors during his junior season in
1958. As a senior co-captain, he piled up numerous awards, including
All Beaver County, All WPIAL, and All State. In 1959, a season in
which Aliquippa made it to the WPIAL Championship Game before
losing to Charleroi, Gene blocked six punts and intercepted six
passes, playing a key role for what was considered one of the best
defenses in Aliquippa history. As a basketball player at Aliquippa,
Gene was a two year starter. As a senior captain, he was the team's
leading scorer and rebounder while earning first team All Section.
After his stellar career at Aliquippa, Gene accepted a football
scholarship to the University of Maryland, where he lettered three
years (1961-1963) for the Terrapins at center. In 1962, Gene earned
All Atlantic Coast Conference honors. In 1963, when he was a team
co-captain, All ACC, an All American nominee, and the Most
Valuable Offensive Lineman at Maryland. He finished his collegiate
career in the North-South Shrine Game. In 1964, Gene signed with the
Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, but did not
play due to active duty with the US Army. In 1978 Gene
was inducted into the Aliquippa Hall of Fame. |
