Luann Guzzetti Richardson's impressive career
in gymnastics began during her high school years at Beaver
Falls. In her freshman year, Luann was Beaver County's first
female qualifier to compete in the PIAA State Championship,
where she earned second overall in the uneven bars. As a
team captain, Luann helped to lead her gymnastics team to
four Section, two WPIAL, and two PIAA State Titles.
While in high school, Luann also competed
nationally against advanced and elite gymnasts, as a member
of the renowned Gym Dandy's private gymnastics team in
Washington, PA. During her tenure there, the Gym Dandies won
a team state championship and regional championships,
including the Junior Capital Cup and the Eastern US Team
Championship.
Luann earned a full scholarship to
the University of Alabama, where she earned All-SEC status
and numerous awards. Luann played an important part in
building the University of Alabama gymnastics team into a
national contender. She had multiple 1st place finishes in
dual meets with other Division 1 teams.
In 1980, Luann was a member of the
University of Alabama's All-Region team, placing 4th on
balance beam in the AIAW Region 3 Championship. The
following year, Luann was a member of the All-State and
All-Region teams, balance beam champion in the Alabama AIAW
Championship, and placed 2nd on the balance beam at the AIAW
Region 3 Championships. She was a member of the Alabama AIAW
Championship team, achieving a 2nd place finish at the AIAW
Region championship.
In 1982, Luann was an All-SEC selection on
the uneven parallel bars and a team member winning 2nd at
AIAW National, SEC, NCAA Region, and AIAW Region
Championships. The following year, the team placed 4th in
NCAA National Championship, won the NCAA Region
Championship, and placed 2nd in SEC Championship.
Luann and her Beaver Falls teammates were
recipients of the 2014 Larry Bruno Foundation Circle of
Achievement Award and in 2016 Luann was an individual
recipient, as well. Luann was also the recipient of the 2018
University of Alabama Sarah Patterson Distinguished Alumni
Award, an award presented to recognize members of the
Alabama gymnastics family who have continued to be leaders
in their everyday lives, professions, and communities.
Luann is an Associate Professor at Robert
Morris University. She lives in Sewickley with her husband
of 31 years Bill and their four children: Ryan, Nathan,
Gina, and Tara. |
