John
Lehman is one of the pioneers of sports medicine in Beaver County: long before the practice was big business, John was walking the
sidelines and riding team buses. John graduated from Rochester High
School, where he was quite a basketball player, being named All
WPIAL and was selected to play in the Beaver County All Star Game.
John continued his cage career at Allegheny College, where he
majored in pre-med; he then went to medical school at Temple
University, where he led his intramural team to a title. John
completed his residency training in Orthopedic Surgery and returned
to Beaver Falls to set up his practice. His keen interest in sports
led to a long relationship with New Brighton football coach
Joe
Hamilton and his Lions squad. John became team doctor for the Lions,
and he was soon asked to serve the same role for teams in Beaver
Falls, Riverside, Beaver, Western Beaver, Ellwood City, and Monaca.
John also spent 35 years as the team physician for the Geneva
College Golden Tornados, which included responsibility for
pre-participation physical examinations, sideline game coverage, and
immediate availability to injured athletes. Working with Trident
Physical Therapy, John pioneered the concept of Saturday Morning
Sports Clinic in his office and was the first in Beaver County to
introduce air splints to treat ankle injuries and arthroscopic joint surgery. John worked on athletes of all ages and
gave many lectures and seminars for area coaching groups and
trainers on the specifics of prevention and treatment of sports
injuries. John was honored with the Blackhawk Boosters’
Distinguished Service Award and has been recognized by Geneva
College and his alma mater, Allegheny College.
