John Mazza achieved success at
a high level in golf. Tri State Professional Golf
Association Player of the Year is a perfect example – an honor he
captured three consecutive years. John was raised in Beaver
Falls but his family moved to Lock Haven when he was a sophomore. At
Bald Eagle High School, he twice competed in the PIAA state golf
championships, finishing as high as sixth his senior year. That year
(1973), he qualified for the US Amateur national championships and
was the second youngest competitor in the field. John went on to
Edinboro University, where he again qualified for the
Amateur national championships in 1978 before turning pro that fall. John
played in the Spacecoast Tour in Florida and placed second in just
his second start. He received his pro card in 1979 and qualified for
31 of his first 33 tournaments. In 1982, John left the tour to play
in Asia and traveled and played extensively in the Far East. John
took a job as the pro at Spring Valley In Huntingdon (WV) in 1984.
After a short stay, he then took the position of golf pro at Fox Run,
where he stayed for nine years. While at Fox Run, he continued to
develop his game and earned a berth in the 1989 US Open. He also won
back to back Tri State Section PGA championships during that time.
He continued to be active in the game through his work with amateurs
and youth of the area and as the club pro at Montour Heights Country
Club.
