Rickard J Mills earned nine letters in
high school, three each in football, basketball, and track and
field. He was All County in 1955 and 1956 and in 1956 earned All
WPIAL as a tackle. He qualified for the WPIAL in 1957 as a discus
thrower. University of Pittsburgh Coach
John Michelosen
recruited Dick, who earned three letters and was voted All East in 1960 for
the Panthers, also winning honorable mention All American and playing
in the All American and Copper Bowl All Star Games. During the 1959
season, Dick picked up a blocked punt against arch rival West
Virginia and scored the only touchdown of his career, but the
Panthers still lost to the Mountaineers. After graduating from Pitt in 1961,
Dick was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round and the
Dallas Texans of the American Football League. Electing to sign with
the Lions, he played the 1961 and 1962 seasons for Detroit, but was
traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1962, where a knee injury in
training camp ended his season. The following year saw Dick in
Pittsburgh Steelers training camp before being released. Dick
returned to Pitt to assist Michelosen during the 1965 season and to
earn a law degree, which he did in 1966. |
