Dave Nichol denies that he is the only
baseball and basketball coach Monaca has ever had, but younger fans
cannot remember anyone else. Dave topped the 300 game victory mark
as a basketball coach during the 1989-1990 season and his cage teams
won the PIAA Class A state title in 1982 and were runners-up in the
1981 WPIAL title tournament. Before becoming head coach, he
served as assistant coach for eight years and as junior high coach
for two years. His coaching career got off to a flying start when
his junior high cagers chalked up a perfect 17-0 record in 1962 and
an overall 32-2 record over two seasons. Dave’s baseball teams
have also fared well, with a combined 355-136 record his first 25
years, with 13 section titles and PIAA state runners-up recognition in
1985. During his own playing days, Dave starred in football,
basketball, and baseball at Monaca High School and was
quarterback for two years at Geneva College and Tarkio College in
Missouri.
