When Paul Pupi graduated from Monaca High
School in 1958, he stood a full 5'-5" tall and
weighed about 130 pounds. Nevertheless, Geneva College took a chance
on the Monaca athlete, probably more for his athletic ability than
his size. In spite of his lack of height and bulk, Paul starred in
both football and basketball at Monaca and also played baseball. He
did the same at Geneva, earning four letters in football, four in
baseball, and two in basketball. At Geneva, Paul grew to 5'-7"
140 pounds, making him a small but elusive halfback in the Golden
Tornado grid squad. Paul quickly earned All Sport honors at Geneva
as a football star, starting with the Pittsburgh Area Coaches All
District Team in 1958. The next year he was named to the Pop Warner
Little All American Team as a scholar-athlete. He had the highest
number of touchdowns in Pennsylvania for a NAIA school and tied for
19th in the nation in scoring with 78 points. After his football
career, Paul practiced general, thoracic, and vascular surgery with
offices in Aliquippa. |
