Chris
Shovlin's colorfully descriptive and commanding style made him one
of Pittsburgh radio's top play by play broadcasters. He twice won
the Pittsburgh March of Dimes Achievement in Radio (AIR) Award for
Play By Play for his calling of Robert Morris football games (with
Jeff Walker) in 1998 and again for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (with
Steve Bell) in 2003, defeating entries submitted by the Pittsburgh
Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates Radio Networks.
A graduate of
Midland High School (1972) and Westminster College (1976), Chris
spent the first 16 years of his career as one of Beaver Valley's
favorite radio personalities, teaming with Bill Fontana on WMBA-AM
(1976-1979), then on WBVP-AM and WWKS-FM (1979-1992).
In Beaver Falls, Chris anchored the station’s award winning newscasts with Jay
Knafel and called the Valley’s most significant high school and
college games over parts of three decades. He revolutionized the way
local news and sports were presented by adopting an innovative
'network delivery' style that enhanced the sound of WVBP, and he led
the station to Pirates spring training and introduced locker room
coverage of the Bucs and Steelers.
In 1981 Chris was appointed
co-host of the 16 station "Gunner Network Sports Talk Show" with the
legendary Bob Prince, and he served as an interim instructor in the
Geneva College speech department in 1982. All the while, Chris was
working his way up the ranks, from announcer to vice president and
general manager – the pinnacle position at WVBP and KISS 106.7.
Chris left the station in 1992 to become the Western Development
Director for Pennsylvania Special Olympics.
Since 1987 Chris has
served as the play by play voice at Robert Morris University and has
broadcast more than 500 Colonial basketball games, including three
trips to the NCAA March Madness tournament, and he has called play
by play for every RMU football game ever played. Starting in 2002,
Chris also handled the play by play for several University of
Pittsburgh Basketball Radio Network broadcasts. As voice of
professional soccer's Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Chris teamed with US
Soccer Hall of Fame player Paul Child on Fox Sports Radio 970, and
he has also called TV play by play on the A League Game of the Week.
Chris has televised some of the biggest WPIAL football and
basketball games on WBGN-TV and served as play by play announcer on
the Comcast High School Football and Basketball Games of the Week,
along with Guy Junker and
John Miller. Chris was the morning sports
anchor on WISH 99.7 and is still one of Pittsburgh’s top morning
personalities, serving as news and sports anchor and 'sidekick' on
the Bogut in the Morning Show on 1320 WJAS-AM. He serves on the
management team for all three Renda Broadcasting Corporation’s
Pittsburgh stations (WISH 99.7, AM News/Talk 1360, and 1320 WJAS) as
the Director of Marketing and Promotion/News and Sports.
Chris has
also served on the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame executive
committee and has been the organization's master of ceremonies at
its annual banquet since 1983. In 2012, Chris was inducted into the
Robert Morris University Athletic Hall of Fame. |
