Jana Sipes was an outstanding track and field
performer at Beaver High School, setting school records in five
different field events and the Beaver County javelin record. After graduating from high school in 1980,
Jana took time to
care for her newborn daughter before going to Slippery Rock
University, where she quickly established herself as a track and field
sensation. While at the Rock, Jana set three school records and set the state
record for the heptathlon. Jana was twice named MVP at the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference meet in field events.
Nationally, Jana placed third in the Penn Relays in the heptathlon
and gained All American status in Division II in both the javelin
and heptathlon in 1986. Upon graduating from Slippery Rock, where she
is a member of its Hall of Fame, she remained active as a competitor
and in 1993 won the USATF National Masters Championship in the
heptathlon and duplicated that accomplishment at the Keystone State
games. Jana also found time to serve as an assistant track
coach at the University of Pittsburgh and Blackhawk High School.
