Joe
Ursida graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1964 and from
Geneva College in 1968 with a degree in business education and was
the Golden Tornadoes co-captain his senior year. Joe started his
coaching career at Beaver Falls Junior High School with
Karl Florie,
and then after a seven year stint at Seneca Valley, Joe went to New
Brighton in 1977 and became head coach in 1990. In 1994, his Lions
won their first WPIAL title since 1951, with a 13-1 overall record
and the school’s first undefeated (10-0) regular season, which
earned Joe Coach of the Year honors. Joe started coaching softball
in 1980 and made New Brighton a yearly contender: his teams won six
section titles and were runners-up nine other times. At the start of
the 2004 season, Joe was the winningest softball coach in Beaver
County, with a 377-149 record. In 2002, Joe was selected one of the
Top 100 Geneva College football players from 1950 to 1975 and was
inducted into the New Brighton Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He is
the only person to be coached by, coached with, and coached against
Larry Bruno. |
