Polo does not receive the
notoriety of football, baseball, basketball, and other sports in the
Beaver County area, but it has been on the local scene for some 55
years. One of the original players was Glenn Robert Watterson. Bob's interest in polo was piqued in the mid 1930s when he attended
matches in Zelienople. When a friend discovered a lost ball, Bob and
others began playing on their own, using broom sticks as
mallets. From that beginning, Bob helped form
the Darlington Polo Club, which is recognized as one of the
strongest in the Middle States district. He starred on one team that
was ranked second in the East. Bob has not only excelled on the
field, which can see horses traveling some 35 to 40 mph, but also as
an administrator. One of Bob’s biggest thrills was playing matches
for charity, and three or four were played every
season for the DT Watson Home. |
