Dr Michael Zernich is one former athlete who
doesn’t rapturize over the good old days. He should know what he is
talking about. Mickey was co-captain of Aliquippa High School’s 1949
undefeated state championship basketball team and has been closely
allied with sports ever since in both his personal and professional
lives. “Players are so much better today,” Mickey
said, “And their training and equipment are also vastly better.”
This is of great concern to Mickey, president of Orthopedics
and Sports Medicine and practitioner at both Aliquippa Hospital and the
Medical Center of Beaver County (and associated with
Dr George Medich).
Mickey lettered in basketball at the University of Pittsburgh from 1951 to 1953,
serving as captain in 1952-1953 and earning All American honorable
mention. He was founder and co-chairman of the Beaver Valley Pitt
Golden Panthers (1972-1978) and has served as an active recruiter
for Pitt, lining up such athletes as
Tony Dorsett,
Jimbo Covert,
and Marlon Ferguson. Mickey is a past president of the Pitt Varsity
Club. He was elected to the Aliquippa Sports Hall of Fame in 1978
and the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1981. He also placed second in the
state high jump competition as a high school junior.
