Rich
McMillen began his football career playing fullback for the Beaver
Falls Fighting Tigers. After graduation in 1952, Rich moved on to
Penn State, where he played guard for Coach Rip Engle and majored in
physical therapy. After college, Rich attended the School of
Physical Therapy in Leetsdale, then spent several years gaining
experience in the field. Rich started sports medicine in the late
1960s with Dr Jay Funkhouser at Northwestern High School (which
became part of the Blackhawk School District in 1973). Rich launched
McMillen Physical Therapy in 1977 and worked hand in hand with
Dr John
Lehman, holding sports medicine seminars together throughout
Beaver County. In 1985 McMillen Therapy became Trident Physical
Therapy, which offered a new sports medicine program in high
schools, placing certified trainers in the schools through matching
funds. Trident was sold to the Center for Rehab Services in 1985,
and Rich retired in November 2001. Rich’s community service included
stints on the Blackhawk Board of Education and as a Community
College of Beaver County trustee.
